Learn to breathe easier with Sante Logo's Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD), which include emphysema and chronic bronchitis, are the most common chronic lung diseases. Affecting twice as many Americans as diabetes, COPD is the nation's fourth leading cause of death.
Strengthening Exercises

Of the estimated 600 patients with COPD who responded to a survey conducted by the American Lung Association in 2001:

Nearly half get short of breath while washing and dressing (44 percent) or doing light housework (46 percent).

One in three (32 percent) get short of breath while talking and 28 percent have difficulty breathing even when sitting or lying still.

Almost one in four (23 percent) say their condition has made them an invalid; eight percent are too breathless to leave home. (American Lung Association. 2001. Breathless in America: New Survey Reveals Impact of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

Cardio Fitness

Santé’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is designed to help these patients improve their daily lives and regain their independence. In addition to patients diagnosed with COPD, patients suffering from these chronic lung conditions could also benefit from the pulmonary training: interstitial diseases, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, thoracic cage abnormalities, neuromuscular disorders, lung transplant and lung reduction candidates.

Our trained physical therapists work closely with the physician to develop a patient-specific plan designed to achieve optimal outcomes. Depending on the patient’s lung condition, training may include:

Lower body exercises to help the patient move about more freely

Upper body exercises to strengthen muscles that support the ribcage to improve breathing

Breathing retraining strengthens the diaphragm to improve breathing and reduce the amount of work involved in breathing
